St. John Ice Cream Social
St. John Church, 5187 Old Marion Rd., Metropolis
St. John Lutheran Church, located near Jefferson School, will host its annual ice cream social on the church grounds with serving beginning at 5 p.m.
Hand cranked homemade style ice cream (pineapple orange and vanilla) along with pork burgers, hamburgers, bratwurst, homemade chicken salad and hot dogs prepared on the premises will be available. In addition, there will be homemade pies, cakes and a variety of other good foods all for the price of a freewill donation. Bulk ice cream may be purchased by the gallon with quantity limits per customer.
The Country Store will be open with canned items, craft items, baked goods, fresh fruits and vegetables available for purchase.
This annual event, a tradition for over 70 years, is accomplished each year with the help of members and friends of St. John Lutheran Church.
If you would like to experience the ole’ time thrill of cranking one of the 50 White Mountain 6 quart freezers currently in service, you are welcome join us for freezing on July 16th and July 21st at 5 p.m. We will crank and freeze about 150 gallons of ice cream on each date.
All net proceeds from the social are donated to selected area recipients experiencing financial need and who have been nominated by congregational members. The recipients are not members of St. John but are part of the congregation’s mission outreach.
The four recipients this year are: Mark Kennedy, age 62 of Metropolis; Esther Sullenger, age 61 of Metropolis; Allie Byrd, age 19 of Vienna; and the family of Dart and Crystal Crim of Metropolis, ages 33, 30, 8, 7, 4, 1 years and 7 months.
Free will offering proceeds will assist with costs associated with multiple surgeries and rehab associated with an auto accident, renal failure, cancer and general necessities associated with fostering additional young family members.
