Metropolis Holiday Happenings Wrap-Up

Metropolis will be the host city for many favorite & traditional holiday happenings.  Plus – several new events have been added throughout the season!  Here are a few of them:

Stuff the Truck Toy Drive
Linwood Motors, 1634 E. 5th St., Metropolis
New, unwrapped toys will be collected for the Kid’s Toy Drive sponsored by Psi Eta Sorority and Metropolis Firefighters Union.  Drive will take place on Saturday, Dec. 16th at the Metropolis Community Center. For information, call 618-638-2426 or 618-645-0512.

Kiwanis Pancake Day Breakfast
6:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Refuge Church Holiday Bazaar

Come get beautiful home decor, Christmas decorations or the perfect present for your love one. This is the perfect opportunity to get a gift with a powerful faith message. Our event will be held at our church and the Christmas parade that will pass right in front of our store front.

Annual Christmas Parade in Metropolis
1:30 p.m.
Theme is “Christmas Now and Then”. Route is Washington Park, on E. 3rd Street, up Ferry Street, left on E. 5th Street, around Superman Square, up Market Street to 9th Street. The Metropolis Chamber invites any organization or business to participate in the parade. The alternate date in case of rain is Sunday, December 3rd at 1:30 p.m. Please listen to WMOK for rain out information. Saturday, Dec. 2
Bring a Toy to the Christmas Parade
1:30- p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Cub Scout Pack 101 is partnering up with the Marine Corps Reserves, Psi Eta Sorority, and Firefighters Local 3367 (that’s the Toys for Tots and Christmas for Kids campaigns) this year. Pack 101’s parade float will be a giant drop box for toys. Bring a new, unwrapped, unopened, toy to the parade, and as the Scouts walk the parade route, they will collect the toys you bring.

6th Annual Santa at the Library
2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Metropolis Library, 317 Metropolis St.
Come to the library and meet Santa Claus after the Christmas Parade. The kids are welcome to come and tell Santa what they want for Christmas and take a picture with him. Metropolis Tour of Homes
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Massac County Historical Society hosts an annual tour of interesting homes and one church with holiday decor from yesteryear, evergreen wreaths, mistletoe and antique tree ornaments. The Curtis House is featured every year and will offer refreshments.  Tickets are $7 and will be available at any home, so tour-goers may start and end at any point. Balloons will mark each home on the tour. 618-524-8297.

Annual Community Advent Walk

Annual Christmas Cookie Sale
9:00 a.m. – noon
First Christian Church, 5th and Catherine streets, Metropolis
A large selection of freshly baked cookies will be available for $6 per pound. Proceeds are used to benefit local families in need throughout the year. Come early because they go fast.

Snowman Fishbowl Craft
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Metropolis LIbrary, 317 Metropolis St.
Come and turn fishbowls into snowmen. All materials will be provided. This craft may be a bit messy so the kids might want to wear old clothes. This program is intended for kids ages 8 and up. Please call 618-524-4312 or come into the library by Friday, Dec. 1st to make sure there will be enough supplies.

Sunday, Dec. 10
Olde Tyme Christmas
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Fort Massac Park Visitor Center, 1308 E. 5th St., Metropolis
The Massiac Marines will be a part of “The Olde Tyme Christmas” at the visitors center. They will show how a traditional Christmas might have been for the French soldier or villager in 1759. Homemade Christmas Cards Craft

Come and make homemade Christmas Cards. The library will provide a variety of materials for the kids to use when making their cards. Visit with Santa and make your own reindeer food, wooden ornaments, Grinch dust and decorate cookies. The cost is $10 per ticket. Space is limited. To reserve a spot call 618-638-3161. Proceeds benefit the MCHS cheerleaders travel expenses to London for New Year’s Day parade.
