HCE Scholarship Applications for Massac County
Home and Community Education Association will be giving scholarships again this year. Last year they awarded 4 scholarships with a total of $1,250. Applications are available at the counselor’s offices and agriculture instructor’s offices at both Massac County and Joppa high schools, and must be postmarked by March 1. Applications also available at University of Illinois Extension Office at 1438 W 10th Street in Metropolis. Oscar Micheaux a novelist turned filmmker, was born in or near Metropolis, Illinois, in 1884 “Homestead”, He was the first African American to produce a first full-length feature. Great Backyard Bird Count
The Great Backyard Bird Count is a free, fun, and easy event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. Participants are asked to count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the four-day event and report their sightings online at birdcount.org. Anyone can take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, from beginning bird watchers to experts, and you can participate from your backyard, or anywhere in the world.

Empty Bowls Glaze-A-Thon

Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) will host a second event in preparation for the Empty Bowls Luncheon on Feb. 25. Individuals ages 14 and older are invited to glaze ceramic bowls that will be used as serving bowls and commemorative gifts to participants at this year’s Empty Bowls Project on Feb. 25. The Throw-A-Thon and Glaze-A-Thon events are free to the public. All instruction and materials will be provided by PSAD. These two creative events will help produce some of the 1,700 bowls for this annual fundraiser, an event that provides operational support to Paducah’s Community Kitchen. Call 270-908-0090 for more information.

President’s Day Holiday Closings
City and county offices, banks, federal offices, and some retail businesses will be closed. The state’s driver service facilities that are normally closed on Monday will be closed on Saturday as well as Monday. Massac Unit One and Joppa-Maple Grove school districts will not be in session.  There will be no delay in trash service in Metropolis.

A family-fun event. Learn the process of making maple syrup from the woods to the kitchen.   Maple syrup demonstrations, interpretive hikes, blacksmith, hide tanning, silk embroidery, furniture making, and local artisans and vendors. A home-cooked pancake breakfast served with harvested maple syrup both days. This project supports the Community Kitchen of Paducah by gathering over 1400 hand-made ceramic bowls and over a dozen different restaurants together to offer a wonderful opportunity to feed the most fragile members of our community. For the price of your ticket you get to choose any one of the handmade bowls in front of you, have it filled by any one of the restaurants there at the event and you go home with your bowl as a token of your commitment to your neighbors.
