School Supply Giveaway is July 28

Need help gathering necessary school supplies for the upcoming school year? The employees of Harrah’s Metropolis, along with other local businesses and organizations are teaming up once again to distribute school supplies gathered through fundraising and donations.

Individuals may stop by the Metropolis Community Center beginning at 5 p.m. to pick up items, while supplies last. Due to demand, adults without children present are allowed up to 3 students’ supplies. Once through, they may return to the back of the line for the chance to acquire more.

Dental Safari Company, a mobile dentistry company specializing in children of all ages 0-18, will be on site offering dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants as needed. Any child is eligible and it is at no cost to the family. Dental Safari accepts Illinois medical card and all private insurance. Find them online at dentalsafaricompany.com or on Facebook.

Southern Seven Health Department will also be on hand offering vaccinations for individuals with medical cards and those who are private pay. There will be a vast array of information on hand as well as information on which car seat is appropriate for your child. Website

Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition (MCDAC) will be handing out drug awareness buttons among other supplies. Facebook

Local hair stylists are donating special offers and free haircuts. They will be giving out coupons that may be redeemed only once at one of the participating businesses.

“Beginning a new school year can be very stressful for both kids and parents. Our goal for this event is to make sure we help alleviate the stress and make their school year enjoyable,” says Chad Lewis, Advertising and Public Relations Supervisor for Harrah’s Metropolis. “Among the many offerings we have planned this year, I’m particularly excited to see some of the local hair stylists who jumped on board by offering their talents and services. A simple haircut alone can boost self-esteem and increase confidence when starting a new school year.”

Harrah’s Hometown Celebration is July 1

Harrah’s Metropolis is once again hosting the Hometown Celebration for the entire family. The event will feature music, a Kid’s Zone along food and drinks available for purchase. Cash is required for all purchases. The Kid’s Zone will feature obstacle courses, bounce houses and more from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Live music will be provided by Throwing Copper starting at 7:30 p.m.

A large display of fireworks will be lighting up the sky at approximately 9:15 p.m. provided by Melrose Pyrotechnics. The fireworks display has been generously sponsored by Harrah’s Metropolis, Greater Metropolis Convention and Visitors Bureau and the City of Metropolis.

A $5 entry fee is required for anyone 2 years and older which will benefit the Harrah’s Metropolis School Supply Giveaway being held on Friday, July 28 at the Metropolis Community Center beginning at 5 p.m.

As an added bonus, another display of fireworks is planned for Tuesday, July 4 located on the Metropolis riverfront at dusk. This public display is hosted by the Farmer family in memory of the late Steven Farmer. Music will be provided by Michelle Bradley.

Oct. 16-17:  SAINTS OF HAVANA
Saints of Havana is currently Nashville’s top drawing all original unsigned Country/Rock act. It is a musical collaboration between Cuban musician brothers Rey and Cesar Montecristo and their All American front-man Aaron Shea.  Their live show is reminiscent of the great 70’s bands as they display amazing musical skills and memorable songwring along with unequaled stage presence. Their music remains true to the Country genre while flawlessly weaving in flavors of flamenco, rock and pop to create a beauful and alluringly unique sound.

Oct. 9-10, 2015:  SPIN THE BOTTLE
Initially named for having a mix of guys and girls, Spin the Bottle will keep you spinning with a variety of entertainment. The set is packed with some traditional favorites along with great songs you haven’t heard in a while. With male and female lead vocals and harmonies, and a melodic blend of saxophone, flute, keyboard, and guitars, Spin The Bottle will keep you wondering what’s up next….while the solid, high energy rhythm section keeps you dancing and singing along.

Oct. 2-3:  THE REMEDIES
The Remedies deliver high-energy rock, pop, and dance hits from the 70’s to today. Comprised of veteran musicians with extensive professional experience, they are sure to bring you some of the best live music Nashville has to offer.

Sept. 25-26:  HEART AND SOUL
Heart and Soul is a very quality based group with all members being in or around the music industry all of their lives. They love to play and take their music very seriously, but they also enjoy being able to play for an audience and love the connections they have with their fans. Heart and Soul’s play list includes: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jason Aldean, Allman Brothers, Bad Company, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, The Black Crowes, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Delbert McClinton, Eagles, Dwight Yoakum, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top.

Sept. 18-19:  TRICK ZIPPER
Trick Zipper is an in-your-face, bass-thumping, string-bending, snare-popping, multi-talented band that thrives off the influences of rock, pop, and soul. Based out of Huntsville, AL,, Trick Zipper formed in late 2013 and after the first practice it was obvious that this was a lineup of extreme talent that would thrive in the entertainment industry.

Sep. 11-12:  OCEAN STREET
Together, Andy Kropf and Mark Kovaly,  formed Ocean Street, a soulful rock & roll duo out of Nashville, with snowballing momentum. Armed with their unique blend of classic and modern influences, from Motown to Van Morrison, Counting Crows, and David Gray, they’ve won over audiences opening for the likes of Gavin De-Graw, Joan Jett, Gin Blossoms and more. Perhaps their most important convert is legendary producer Norbert Putnam, best known for his work with high profile icons like Jimmy Buffet, Joan Baez, Donovan, and Dan Fogelberg. 

Sep. 4-5:  THE SPAZMATICS
The Spazmatics have awesome sounds, styles, and way cool dance steps from the 1980′s decade we’d love to forget. Complete with skinny ties, Brill Creamed hair, and horn-rimmed glasses, The Spazmatics recapture all the best of the worst. Outstanding musicianship combined with creative flair and style makes for an evening of pure energy and entertainment.

Aug. 28-29:  REVELRY
Revelry will be bringing you rock, funk, radio-friendly, and non-radio-friendly tunes (and everything in between). They will have the dance floor shaking with their eclectic mix of funk, rock, oldies, jazz, southern rock, and more.

Aug. 21-22:  TOMMY AKERS BAND
The Tommy Akers Band performs good old fashioned Southern rock, Blues Soul, Classic Rock, R&B and country music. The band is known for playing mid-south casinos, special events and clubs, their song list includes music from artists such as: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Alabama, Merle Haggard, Poison, Matchbox 20 and many more.

Aug. 14-15:  GARY NICHOLS
Country artist Gary Nichols signed to Mercury Nashville Records in 2006. Nichols made his debut that year with the release of his single “Unbroken Ground”, which reached No. 39 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Following it were the singles “I Can’t Love You Anymore” and “Goin’ Fast.”

Aug. 7-8:  broadBAND
As the clever name implies, all the members are women. Individually they have opened for artists from George Jones and Dwight Yoakham to Sara Evans and Keith Urban.  They have landed the opportunity to share the stage with many major acts including Sugarland, Rascal Flatts, Brooks and Dunn, Dierks Bentley, Taylor Swift and Zac Brown among others.

July 31-Aug. 1:  THE REMEDIES

July 24-25:  THE CRUISERS
The Cruisers are Paducah’s Party Band. They have been playing live music continuously since 1988. Their song list spans 6 decades – from the 1950’s to today. Ranging from Blues, Classic Rock, Pop, Country Rock, Funk, Soul, Motown, and Light Jazz.

July 17-18, 2015:  THE BREAKFAST CLUB
The Breakfast Club is a high energy rock/ dance 80’s tribute band, whose every song is a hit that brings the house down ‘I know this song!’ sing-alongs. Moonwalk down memory lane with The Breakfast Club as they spin you right round to all the radical sounds, styles, and way cool dance steps from the 1980’s In over-the-top retro 80’s attire.

July 10-11:  SOUL DOG
Soul Dog plays this weekend in the Signature Bar. From the Purchase area, Soul Dog members David Booth, Rick Buress, Terry Fox and Kevin Qualls play a mix of Soul and Classic rock. From Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett to Van Morrison and David Bowie, you’re sure to hear something you’ll enjoy.

Due to demand, adults without children present are allowed up to three students’ supplies. Once through, they may return to the back of the line for the chance to acquire
more. All children present will take priority at the front of the line at all times.

Dental Safari Company, a mobile dentistry company specializing in children of all ages 0-18, will be on site offering Dental Exams, Cleanings, Fluoride treatments and sealants as needed. Harrah’s will be hosting an evening of fun, food and fireworks for the entire family. The event will feature music, Kid’s Zone, food, and drinks. En Fuego BBQ and Grill Team will also be on site provided unique varieties of BBQ specials. Drink stations will also be available with $1 sodas and water. The Kid’s Zone will feature obstacle courses, bounce houses and more.  Cash is required for all purchases.

To end the event, a large display of fireworks will be lighting up the sky at approximately 9 p.m. by Melrose Pyrotechnics. The fireworks display has been generously sponsored by Harrah’s Metropolis, Greater Metropolis Convention and Visitors Bureau and the City of Metropolis.

A one-time $5 entry fee is required for anyone 2 years and older at the entrance. The money raised will be donated to the Harrah’s Metropolis School Supply Giveaway which will be held on Thursday, July 23 at the Metropolis Community Center.

As an added bonus for the weekend, there will be another display of fireworks on Saturday, July 4 at Washington Park. This public display is hosted by the Farmer family in memory of the late Steven Farmer.
