School Supply Giveaway is August 3

Need help gathering necessary school supplies for the upcoming school year? The employees of Harrah’s Metropolis, along with other local businesses and organizations are teaming up once again to distribute school supplies gathered through fundraising and donations.

Individuals may stop by the Metropolis Community Center beginning at 5 p.m. to pick up items, while supplies last. Due to demand, adults without children present are limited to up to 3 students’ supplies. Once through, they may return to the back of the line for the chance to acquire more.

Dental Services, Any child is eligible for free dental cleanings.

Southern Seven Health Department will also be on hand offering vaccinations for individuals with medical cards and those who are private pay. There will be a vast array of information on hand as well as information on which car seat is appropriate for your child. Website

Local hair stylists are donating special offers and free haircuts. They will be giving out coupons that may be redeemed only once at one of the participating businesses.

“Beginning a new school year can be very stressful for both kids and parents. Our goal for this event is to make sure we help alleviate the stress and make their school year enjoyable,” says Chad Lewis, Advertising and Public Relations Supervisor for Harrah’s Metropolis. “A simple haircut alone can boost self-esteem and increase confidence when starting a new school year.”

K-8TH REGISTRATION

Tuesday Aug. 7, or Wednesday August 8
Tue. 5-7 p.m.
Wed. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Register at all Massac Unit #1 elementary/junior high buildings.
Parents of new and returning students should register their children during this time. Registration fee is $17.

9TH-12TH REGISTRATION

Tuesday-Friday, August 7-10
8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 pm.
Tue. Aug. 7 – Seniors
Wed. Aug. 8 – Juniors
Thu. Aug. 9 – Sophomores
Fri. Aug. 10 – Freshmen
Register at Massac County High School
Registration fee is $20. The annual parking pass is $15.

Wednesday, August 15th will be the first day of student attendance from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Before registering at their school building, new students must first prove residency with Lisa Monkman at the Massac School Board Office located at 401 Metropolis Street in Metropolis. For residency requirements, call Lisa Monkman at 618-524-9376, ext. 101.

New students will also need to bring a valid, state-issued birth certificate.

Physical forms are required for all new students, and returning kindergarten and sixth grade.

Blood lead screenings are required of children below the age of 6 if they have not been previously screened.

Cafeteria account deposits should also be made at this time. Free and reduced applications will also be available during registration.

Unit #1 School District is also encouraging parents to share their cell phone numbers for emergency contact information as well as their email addresses, if available.

The Metropolis Police Department is partnering with the local charity group, Weekend Blessings, this year to help feed our school kids. The Metropolis Police van will be parked at the following locations on the listed dates. Help stuff the van to provide food for children in need during the weekends.

Type of foods they are looking for are:
Single serve portions of Macaroni & Cheese, Ravioli, Soup, Vienna Sausages, Ramen Noodles, Applesauce, Fruit Cups, Granola Bars, Snack Bars, Chips, Cookies, Rice Krispie Treats and Fruit Snacks.

The van will be at the following locations:

  • Tue. Nov. 7 – Metropolis Elementary
  • Wed. Nov. 8 – Unity Elementary
  • Thu. Nov. 9 – Brookport Elementary
  • Tue. Nov. 14 – Jefferson Elementary
  • Wed. Nov. 15 – Franklin Elementary

Unable to make it to one of the schools to donate? No problem. Metropolis City Hall will also have a box available for donations to be dropped off.

Each Friday, Weekend Blessings provides participating children receive a bag consisting of two breakfast selections, two lunch selections, two dinner selections, a dairy snack, a fruit snack and a fun snack in their school lockers. Currently, the Weekend Blessings Program is serving 125-130 local students each week. Average yearly cost to operate the program is $23,000. Miss Metropolis Scholarship Pageant is Oct. 29

Metropolis area young ladies take part in this competition which is a preliminary to the Miss Illinois and Miss America pageants. During the evening, the Miss Metropolis Outstanding Teen and Miss Metropolis Mentoring Program Princesses will also be crowned. New this year will be a crowning of a second teen contestant, and the new title will be Miss Massac County Outstanding Teen.

Competition includes interview, talent, swimsuit and evening wear, and on-stage question.

Four young ladies who are competing for Miss Metropolis will mentor the princesses listed below before and during the pageant.

Tickets are $9 in advance or $10 at the door. Advanced tickets are recommended and can be purchased from any contestant or Sandy Farmer. Program books are $3 each. Refreshments provided by the MCHS Band Boosters and DVDs of the pageant can be purchased for $20 from Kingery Productions by filling out an order form at the pageant or contacting Sandy Farmer.

Parents of new and returning students should register their students at all Massac Unit One buildings.

Three items are required and one must be a utility bill. Other items can be a driver’s license, rent receipt, tax bill, mortgage coupon, voter registration card, vehicle registration or insurance.

Fri. Aug. 7:  Freshmen, whose last names are from A-L, 8:30-11 a.m.  Freshmen whose last names are from M-Z, 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Mon. Aug. 10:  Registration for students who could not register on their assigned day as well as new students.

Tue. Aug. 11:  Freshman orientation at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

Wed. Aug. 12:  First full day of classes

Buses will not run on August 5-7. When students register, they need to pay their book rent of $20 or fill out a waiver. Student drivers will need to purchase a parking pass. They will then receive their schedule of classes, temporary ID badge and student insurance information.
